Have you looked at the new Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil Machine and wondered, “It’s beautiful…but what would I actually do with it?”

Today I want to show you!

One of the things I’m enjoying most about hot foiling is that it doesn’t have to be used the same way on every card. A little bit of foil can add an elegant finishing touch to a simple card—or it can become the star of an elaborate showstopper.

For today’s three cards, I used the Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil Machine in three completely different ways:

Backgrounds • Sentiments • WOW Focal Points

And although I’m using several different Stampin’ Up! bundles and suites today, that’s really the point! I wanted to show you how versatile the Hot Foil Machine can be and how you can combine hot foil with the stamps, dies and Designer Series Paper you already enjoy using.

1. Butterfly Flight: Make Hot Foil the WOW Focal Point

We’re starting with the showstopper!

For this special fun-fold card, I used the Butterfly Flight Bundle to create those gorgeous gold butterfly focal points.

What I especially love about these butterflies is that the foiling is only the beginning. After creating the beautiful gold outlines with the Hot Foil Machine, I used the coordinating decorative masks to add soft color to the butterfly wings.

This is a wonderful way to get even more versatility from a hot foil image. You aren’t limited to a metallic image on plain cardstock—the foiled design becomes the framework for adding color and creating a much more detailed focal point.

Why this works

When you’re creating an elaborate fun fold, you don’t necessarily need lots of different embellishments competing for attention. A strong focal image can do most of the work for you.

The gold foil immediately draws your eye to the butterflies, while the masked color gives them softness and dimension. Repeating the butterflies throughout the card also helps all of those different panels feel like one coordinated design.

And because this card has so much going on structurally, I kept the rest of the design fairly controlled. That’s one of my favorite cardmaking tricks: when one element is the star, let it be the star.

2. Botanical Glow: Turn a Simple Background into Something Special

Our second card shows how hot foil can completely change the look of a relatively simple card.

I paired the Botanical Glow Bundle with shades of blue and silver foil for an elegant, almost monochromatic design.

The stamped leafy images create the foundation of the background, while the silver Botanical Glow hot foil vine adds another layer of detail and shine.

Layering is the secret

This is a technique I use often in cardmaking: instead of adding more things to a card, add another layer of visual texture.

The stamping gives us color and movement.

The hot foil adds light and shine.

The sentiment gives the eye a place to land.

Because the foil catches the light differently than ink or cardstock, it adds dimension without adding bulk. That’s especially useful when you want a card to feel special but don’t necessarily want lots of layers and embellishments.

The result is clean and elegant—but definitely not boring!

This is also a great example of how hot foil doesn’t always need to dominate your design. Sometimes that little flash of metallic detail is exactly what takes a card from pretty to WOW.

3. Sweetly Sentimental: Foil 11 Greetings at Once!

Our third card may demonstrate one of the most practical ways to use the Hot Foil Machine.

I used the Sweetly Sentimental Bundle, which lets you create an entire collection of beautiful foiled greetings at one time.

The hot foil die contains 11 different sentiments on one plate, so you can foil all 11 greetings in one pass. Then use the coordinating cutting die to cut them out.

Just like that, you’ve got a wonderful assortment of foiled sentiments ready for several different cards!

I love this because I’m always looking for ways to make my creative time work a little harder for me. If I’m already getting out my Hot Foil Machine, foil and cardstock, why create only one greeting when I can make a whole collection?

Use the sentiment you need today and tuck the extras away for your next projects.

Let your Designer Series Paper guide your choices

For this card, I paired the gold-foiled Sweetly Sentimental greetings with the Bloom Boutique Suite and the beautiful Bloom Boutique Designer Series Paper.

The DSP already contains lovely gold accents, so repeating that gold in the sentiments makes the entire design feel intentional and coordinated.

I also used the floral and greenery dies from the Boutique Blossoms Bundle to build the focal arrangement.

This is one of the easiest ways to choose metallics when you’re designing a card: look at your Designer Series Paper first.

If your paper already has gold accents, try repeating gold in your foil, embellishments or other small details. If the paper has silver, do the same with silver. Those repeated elements help pull everything together without requiring a lot of extra design decisions.

Three Ways to Use Your Hot Foil Machine

That’s what I hope you take away from today’s projects.

Your Hot Foil Machine doesn’t have to be reserved for one particular style of card.

Use hot foil to create a background.

Use it to make a whole collection of sentiments.

Or make it the star of the card with a beautiful foiled focal point.

Once you start thinking of foil as another design element—just like ink, Designer Series Paper, ribbon or embellishments—you’ll begin spotting all kinds of places to add that little extra shine.

And you certainly don’t have to make an elaborate fun fold every time!

Sometimes one simple silver vine or a beautiful gold sentiment is all your card needs.
